How to Migrate from Wix to WordPress (Without Losing Your Rankings)
Short answer: Wix doesn't offer a full-site export that WordPress can import. Your design and pages have to be rebuilt in WordPress. Some content can be moved: blog posts (partly), store products, and contacts. Images you uploaded can be downloaded. The step that protects your Google rankings is the one most people skip: 301 redirects from every old Wix URL to its new WordPress address.
What moves and what doesn't
| Content | Can it be exported from Wix? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Page design and layout | No | Rebuild in WordPress |
| Page text | Not as an export | Copy it over manually (good moment to rewrite it) |
| Blog posts | Partly | The Wix RSS feed only includes the 20 most recent posts, as ~500-character excerpts. Full posts need manual copying or a third-party tool. |
| Images you uploaded | Yes | Download from the Wix Media Manager. Wix-provided, Shutterstock and Unsplash images can't be downloaded. |
| Store products | Yes | CSV export (up to 5,000 rows, physical products only) |
| Orders | Yes | CSV, but they may need mapping before WooCommerce accepts them |
| Contacts | Yes | CSV (up to 50,000) |
| Members' accounts | No | Members must re-register: passwords don't transfer |
| Contact forms and navigation | No | Rebuild |
The migration, step by step
- Inventory every URL. List every page and post on the Wix site, with its address. This list becomes your redirect map. Don't skip it.
- Set up WordPress hosting in your own name, so the account, the server and the admin login are yours. See the ownership checklist.
- Rebuild the structure in WordPress. Use the move to fix what didn't work: one page per service, clearer navigation, faster pages.
- Move the content: text, images, blog posts, products.
- Recreate forms and test that they deliver to the right inbox.
- Map redirects: every old Wix URL → its new WordPress URL, as 301 (permanent) redirects.
- Switch the domain: point the DNS to your new host, or transfer the domain away from Wix. Wix domains can't be transferred within 60 days of purchase, and private registration has to be off first. If your email runs on the domain, re-create the MX records, or email will stop.
- After launch: submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console, check the Pages report for errors, and test the old URLs to confirm they redirect.
How to keep your Google rankings
Rankings are attached to URLs. If your Wix page /services-1 ranked and it now returns a 404, that ranking is gone. To keep it:
- 301-redirect every old URL to the closest new page, not everything to the homepage.
- Keep the content that ranked. Improve it, but don't delete the page that brought in traffic.
- Keep titles and headings close to the originals on the pages that performed.
- Watch Search Console for a few weeks after the switch. A temporary dip is normal, and a lasting drop usually means missing redirects. If pages vanish entirely, see why a site doesn't show up on Google.
Should you migrate at all?
Moving is worth it when you need something Wix limits: more control over SEO and site speed, specific plugins or integrations, a site you can take to any host, or lower long-term costs at scale. It's not worth it if the site works, brings in leads, and you're happy editing it yourself. In that case, fix what's broken and stay. We compared the platforms in Wix vs Squarespace vs WordPress.
DIY or hire someone?
| DIY | Hire it out | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Hosting plus your time | A rebuild price, plus hosting |
| Time | Days to weeks, depending on the site | Usually a few weeks |
| Risk | Missed redirects, broken forms, lost email | Lower, if redirects and testing are in the scope |
| Best for | Small sites, no store, comfortable with WordPress | Sites that bring in leads, or have a store or blog with traffic |
A Wix-to-WordPress move is a rebuild, so it's priced like one. See website design cost for 2026 ranges, and make sure redirects and form testing are written into the scope of any quote you accept.

Frequently asked questions
Can I export my Wix site to WordPress?
Not as a full site. Wix has no export WordPress can import. Pages and design must be rebuilt, while some content (products, contacts, images, partial blog posts) can be exported.
Will I lose my Google rankings if I move from Wix to WordPress?
Not if you 301-redirect every old URL to its new equivalent and keep the content that ranked. Most lost rankings in migrations come from missing redirects.
How long does a Wix to WordPress migration take?
For a small business site, typically a few weeks, including rebuild, content, redirects and testing. A large blog or store takes longer.
Can I keep my domain?
Yes. Point the domain to your new host, or transfer it away from Wix (not within 60 days of purchase). Remember to re-create email records if your email uses the domain.
Is WordPress better than Wix?
For control, portability and SEO flexibility, usually yes. For simplicity and doing it yourself, Wix is easier. It depends on who will run the site.
