How Much Does Website Design Cost for a Small Business? (2026)
Short answer: in 2026, a professionally built website for a small service business usually costs $2,000–$10,000, depending on who builds it and what's included. DIY builders cost $200–$600 a year in plan fees (you do the work). Freelancers range from $500 to $10,000+, and agencies from $3,000 to $30,000+. The sticker price is only part of it: hosting, maintenance and content changes decide what you actually pay in year one.
What website design costs, by who builds it
| Who builds it | Typical price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, WordPress.com) | $4–$99/month in plan fees, about $200–$600/year for a small business plan | A template you assemble and maintain yourself. You are the designer, the editor and the support desk. |
| Freelancer | $500–$10,000+ | Anything from a template setup to a custom build. Quality and accountability vary the most here. |
| Small studio / small agency | $2,000–$12,000* | A structured, custom site with mobile build, technical SEO and someone accountable after launch. |
| Agency | $3,000–$30,000+ (large agencies up to ~$48,000) | Strategy, integrations, project management, more revision rounds. |
| E-commerce / large sites | $10,000–$50,000+ | Stores, portals, logins, custom functionality. |
In GoodFirms' 2026 survey of 300+ web development firms, 59.9% quote $1,000–$3,000 for a basic website, and the most common range for a mid-sized site is $5,000–$20,000. Ranges come from the sources listed at the end of this page. \*The small-studio row is our own synthesis: WebFX puts small agencies at $6,000–$12,000, and independent studios (us included) publish entry packages from about $2,000. Why one project gets a $900 quote and another gets $9,000
The gap is rarely about how pretty the design is. It's about what's inside the number:
- Discovery and structure. Some quotes start building pages on day one. Others start with who you serve, what the visitor needs to do next, and which pages actually earn their place.
- Content. Pasting in your own text is cheap. Having it structured and edited for the web takes real time, and quotes rarely price it the same way.
- Custom vs. template. A pre-built theme is fast. A layout built around your business costs designer hours.
- Functionality. Booking, payments, CRM connections and a second language each add work.
- Who is accountable after launch. This separates cheap quotes from expensive ones more than anything else.
Small business website cost: what most owners actually need
Most local service businesses (plumbers, cleaners, clinics, contractors, consultants) need the same core:
- 5–7 pages: home, services, about, contact, and one page per main service
- A mobile-first build that loads fast
- Clear calls to action: call, book, or request a quote
- Basic technical SEO, Google Analytics and Search Console set up in your accounts
- Domain, hosting and logins registered in your name
Small studios and experienced freelancers commonly quote that scope somewhere in the $2,000–$6,000 range. That's our read of published pricing, not a survey, so your quotes may differ. You only need to go above it for integrations, many service areas, a store, or heavy custom functionality.
What a quote usually leaves out
This is where a $3,000 project becomes a $6,000 year. Ask about each item before you sign:
| Item | Typical cost | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | $2–$15/month shared; more for managed hosting | Whose account is it in? |
| Domain | about $10–$60/year | Is it registered in my name? |
| Maintenance (updates, backups, security) | $35–$100/month for a small site; managed plans $89–$359/month | Is it included? For how long? |
| Content changes | often billed hourly | How many edits are included each month? |
| Analytics and Search Console | often skipped | Set up in my accounts, or yours? |
| Handover | rarely written down | Will I get a document with every login? |

How much does a website redesign cost?
A redesign usually costs about the same as a new build in the same tier, because the work is comparable. It can cost less if the structure and content stay and only the design and technical layer change. If you're not sure whether you need a redesign or a set of fixes, an audit answers that before you commit.
Hourly vs. fixed price
Hourly quotes are hard to compare because the total isn't known until the end. A fixed price is easier to plan around, but only if the scope is written down: number of pages, revision rounds, what's excluded. We compared both in hourly vs. fixed-price web design.
How to compare two quotes fairly
- Same scope. A 5-page quote and a 12-page quote are not the same product.
- List the exclusions (hosting, content, maintenance, changes) and price each one.
- Ask what happens at the end. Who holds the domain, the hosting and the accounts? Use our ownership checklist.
- Ask who answers when something breaks. You want a name, not a ticket queue.
- Compare the year-one total, not the build price.
Is a DIY builder cheaper?
In cash, yes: about $200–$600 a year for a small business plan. In time, it costs whatever your hours are worth, and you own the result only as long as you keep paying the platform. If you're weighing that option, read Wix vs Squarespace vs WordPress.
Not sure which tier you need?
Start with a $300 audit: a prioritized diagnosis of your current site (what's costing you leads and what to fix first) before you spend anything on a rebuild.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a website cost for a small business in 2026?
For a typical local service business built by a small studio or experienced freelancer, quotes commonly fall around $2,000–$6,000. DIY builders cost roughly $200–$600 a year in plan fees. Agencies range from $3,000 to $30,000+.
Is $1,500 a good price for a website?
It can be. At that price you're usually buying a competent template-based build, with you supplying the structure and the content. It rarely includes custom structure, a technical SEO setup, revision rounds or support after launch. Judge it by scope, not by the number.
How much does website maintenance cost per month?
For a small site, $35–$100/month for basic upkeep. Managed plans with a person you can contact run about $89–$359/month. Details are in website maintenance cost.
How much does it cost to redesign a website?
Usually about the same as a new build in the same tier. Less if the structure and content stay and only the design changes.
Why do agencies charge so much more than freelancers?
You're paying for strategy, project management, more people and more revision rounds. Whether that's worth it depends on how complex your site is. Most small service businesses don't need it.
