Buyer's guide
How Much Does Website Maintenance Cost? (2026 Prices)
Short answer: for a small business website in 2026, maintenance typically costs $35–$100 a month for basic upkeep, or $89–$359 a month for a managed plan with a person you can contact. On top of that, expect $2–$15 a month for basic shared hosting and about $10–$60 a year for the domain, unless your plan includes them. The real question isn't the price but what's included. Use the checklist below.
What you're actually paying for
| Item | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | ~$10–$60/year | Must be registered in your name |
| Hosting | $2–$15/month shared; more for managed or cloud hosting | Sometimes included in a maintenance plan |
| SSL certificate | Often free; paid certificates exist | Most hosts include a free certificate |
| Updates (core, theme, plugins) | $15–$105/month as a standalone service | The single most important item on WordPress |
| Backups and restore | Usually inside a plan | Ask how often, where they're stored, and how fast a restore is |
| Security and uptime monitoring | Usually inside a plan | Someone should know before you do when the site is down |
| Content changes | Included edits, or billed hourly | The item most likely to surprise you |

Maintenance plan prices: four levels
| Level | Typical monthly price | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Automated only | $5–$50 | Automatic updates and backups. No human checks anything. |
| Basic small-site upkeep | $35–$100 | Updates, backups, uptime checks. Little or no content work. |
| Managed plan | $89–$359 | Tested updates, security, monitoring, support, often some edits |
| Retainer | $500+ | Reserved development hours, for larger or business-critical sites |

What a maintenance plan should include
Before you sign, make sure you get a clear "yes" to each:
- Updates tested before they go live, not just auto-applied
- Backups at least daily, stored off the server, with a tested restore
- Uptime monitoring with alerts to a human
- Security: firewall or malware scanning, and a plan if the site is hacked
- Form testing: someone checks that your contact form still delivers
- A set number of content changes per month, in writing
- Response time in business days, in writing
- Your accounts stay yours: hosting, domain and admin in your name (ownership checklist)
Do you need a maintenance plan at all?
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Wix, Squarespace or another hosted builder | The platform handles updates and hosting. You mostly need someone for content changes, if anyone. |
| WordPress site, rarely changed | At minimum: automated updates, off-site backups and uptime monitoring. Check it monthly. |
| WordPress site that brings in leads | A managed plan. A broken form or a hacked site costs more than a year of maintenance. |
| Online store or bookings | Managed plan plus staging for updates. Downtime here costs sales directly. |
The cheapest maintenance is the kind you plan for
Most expensive website problems are ones nobody watched for: a plugin that stopped updating, a contact form that silently broke, a domain that expired. If you inherited a site and don't know its state, an audit tells you what's outdated, what's at risk and what to fix first, before you commit to a monthly plan.

Frequently asked questions
How much does website maintenance cost per month for a small business?
About $35–$100 for basic upkeep, and $89–$359 for a managed plan with support and some content changes. Hosting and the domain may be extra.
How much does it cost to maintain a website per year?
Basic upkeep for a small site runs roughly $400–$1,200 a year, and managed plans $1,000–$4,300 a year, plus hosting and the domain if they're not included.
What's the difference between hosting and maintenance?
Hosting is where the site lives (the server). Maintenance is the work that keeps it healthy: updates, backups, security, fixes and edits. Some plans bundle both.
Is website maintenance worth it?
If the site brings in leads, usually yes. One broken contact form or one hacked site can cost more than a year of maintenance.
Can I maintain my website myself?
Yes, if you're comfortable running updates, checking backups and fixing what breaks. Hosted builders like Wix and Squarespace need much less of this than WordPress.
